DID YOU KNOW THAT....
► UVA is one cause for the formation of wrinkles
► UVA-1 radiation induces MMP-1* expression
► UVA induces oxidative stress, DNA damage and inflammation
► UVA radiation induces DNA damage in keratinocytes and melanocytes
UVA irradiation:
- is less energetic
- penetrates deeper into the skin
- is 20 times more abundant
- decreases to a lesser extent in winter … than UVB

But also, UVA
(irradiates through glass, while UVB is filtered out) & does not increase " Vitamin D " synthesis in the skin.
- The graph shows how effective the UV rays are in producing erythema in the skin.
- UVB rays are approximately a thousand times
more effective in producing an
erythemal response in the skin.
Impact of UVA ( The silent damage )
The irradiation of skin with UVA creates free radicals.
Free radicals are created as the photons in UV radiation can release electrons from molecules (e.g. oxygen or skin lipids) making them reactive to interact with other constituents in the skin, thus changing their structure.
- an increase of damaged elastic fibers
- Hyperpigmentation
- DNA degradation
